Zinfandel Warrior Fires 2008

$26.00
Warrior Fires Zinfandel

Reminiscent of a Barolo or Barbaresco, with its earthy raspberry flavors, intensity, acidity, and tannins, picking up a rich core of truffle and mineral on the finish. Hot but packs in lots of goodies.(Wine Spectator)

Our customers, trade and media have made Warrior Fires Zinfandel our flagship wine. First made in 1994, it is a blend of neighboring Zinfandel grapevines planted in 1947 and younger Petite Sirah grapes grown in our own vineyards. The soils here in the Shenandoah are sandy to room size weathered granite fragments washed down from ancient glaciers of the Sierra Nevada. The soils are red from oxidized iron and manganese. The soils in our Petite Sirah corner are anomalous however having been burned and blackened by thousands of years of Mi Wuk Indian campfires. Pigeon Creek and a spring are nearby. There is often a faint taste of tar or charcoal in the wine, but the flavors are always dominated by the cherry-cola element of Amador Zinfandel.

Warrior Fires Zinfandel is quite ageable. It can be a little tough and tannic at release but give it five years after release for peak performance.

Suggested food match: Red beans, rice, Andouille sausage, with Monday night football.

Just as this ugly run

Just as this ugly run started, we decided that despite the success we had achieved in the first ten years, our Syrah vines were not totally happy and we had enough farming experience to realize we could do a better job of growing. We decided to replant Syrah in a different location on our property and use an unusual trellis system. In 2000 we did so, and while we were doing it we cbest chose to plant several rootstock-scion combinations. Two years later we decided to re-orient the trellis direction from north-south to east-west, and did so without disturbing the grapes, an almost incomprehensible project. But that is another story. 2004 was the first pick from these new vines, and you can imagine our thrill and relief when the wine was not only excellent but the vines asvab thrived on the new trellis. The wine has the signature berry-currant and meat taste of Syrah and surprising body for such a young vineyard. It is exciting to contemplate what may evolve in the next cahsee ten to twenty years given the auspicious beginning...
